What to Expect
This first appointment is designed to be brief and will often involve very little treatment. The purpose of the visit is to foster a sense of comfort and familiarity for your child. We’ll conduct a thorough examination of your child’s teeth, checking for decay, any signs of gum, jaw or oral issues, and examine the bite.
If necessary, teeth cleaning, fluoride treatment and/or x-rays may be carried out. Beyond the treatment itself, we’ll discuss any current concerns and educate parents about effective dental health care for their children – including brushing and cleaning techniques, nutrition recommendations and methods of prevention. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask any questions that you may have. Setting a pattern for dental appointments will help to create a proper oral care routine at an early age, creating lifelong habits.
At Macarthur Paediatric Dentistry, we emphasise the importance of confidence-building between your child and their paediatric dentist. To ensure proactive oral health management, we recommend scheduling dental check-ups at least every six months. Regular visits will allow us to closely monitor your child’s dental development and enable us to address any emerging issues promptly.
Below are issues that our specialist children’s dentist will inform you about:
– Cavity prevention
– Oral hygiene habits, practices and tips
– Need for Fluoride treatments or applications
– Habits that may affect teeth and the development of the jaws, such as tongue sucking, thumb sucking and tongue thrusting
– Teething
– Developmental milestones
– Nutrition Dental check-up schedules
How To Care For Your Child’s Teeth
Healthy teeth are vital to your child’s overall health and well-being and proper oral care is critical.
– Excellent oral care assists in setting good dental habits as your children grow, while poor oral care often leads to pain, disease, infection, or other oral issues. Here are some tips to help make dental hygiene more fun:
– Let your child choose the colour of their toothbrush (or the character on their toothbrush)
– Let your child choose their favourite flavour of toothpaste
– Use a timer to make sure they brush their teeth for at least 2 minutes
– Acknowledge and reinforce good oral care habits
– Plan a fun activity following every visit to the dentist
